Changes to fee free banking

To ensure a fairer distribution of benefits to all our members in the future, a decision has been made to introduce limited fees on specific accounts from 1 March 2008.

Based on current banking habits, almost all PC members should continue to enjoy fee free banking by making a few simple adjustments to the way their banking is conducted. Members under the age of 18 will be exempt from all fees. Fees will only be charged on a few transaction methods (the most costly) and only for relatively high use on S1 accounts. This will leave the remainder of our savings products and most transaction methods fee free.

It is important to note the introduction of these limited fees is not intended as a profit generating activity. It will simply allow us to recoup a small portion of the costs we incur each year and to become more competitive across all our products and services. Most members will be unaffected and all members will have the opportunity to adjust their banking habits and avoid paying fees.

Simple tips to ensure your banking remains fee free

When paying for goods and services, press ‘Credit’ instead of ‘Savings’.

Use BPAY to pay bills where possible instead of using EFTPoS or cheques.

Set up regular payments or funds transfers for bills where possible via pc.easynet.

Combine your transactions – pay for goods and withdraw cash simultaneously.

Avoid making small sum withdrawals too frequently through EFTPoS and ATMs.

Use pc.easynet or Rapid Response to check your account balances (don’t press the account balance option at ATMs).

Your questions answered

1. When are transactions tallied and fees charged?

Transactions are tallied on the last business day of the month. Total fees are charged at the end of each month and debited to your account at this time. A transaction summary, presented on your statement, which will detail the breakdown of transactions by each type.

2. How will overseas ATM withdrawals or overseas cash advances be charged?
You will receive 4 free Visa cash advance withdrawals per month. Overseas ATMs are considered to be Visa cash advances.

3. My partner and I have a joint account. How many transactions do we get?
Transactions will be calculated on a per account basis and joint account holders will share the limited free transactions on each account. Excess transactions will be charged to each account transacted upon on the last business day of the month.

4. How can I limit the fees I incur? Are there any handy hints?
By making a few small adjustments, most of our members should still enjoy fee free banking.

5. Will requests for balance or ATM attempts with insufficient funds be included as chargeable transactions?
Only completed transactions where you withdraw cash will be included in your chargeable transactions. Please note ATMs do not give Police Credit account balances, but Police Credit is charged for every attempt you make. To check your account balances, call Rapid Response or log on to pc.easynet. If you are not registered for these services, call Member Response on 13 63 73.

6. I'm under 18. Will I incur fees, even if I have a CueCard.
Members under 18 are exempt from all transaction fees.

7. I have a CueCard and am over 18. Will I incur transaction fees?
Yes. As your CueCard links to your S1 account all S1 type transaction accounts, are subject to excess transaction fees.

8. Will Social Club or Tea Club accounts be charged transaction fees for issuing cheques?
As fees are charged on a per account basis the account owner will be entitled to 10 free cheque withdrawals per month. Registered charities will be exempted from any transaction fees. If you are a registered charity and wish to be exempt from transaction fees, write to:

Police Credit,
Account Access
PO Box 669
Carlton South, VIC 3053.

9. How can I tell how many chargeable transactions I've made so far this month?
Police Credit provides handy transaction record booklets (Your Visa User Guide & Transaction Record) that allow you to keep track of your transactions. Your chequebook stubs / receipts can assist you in knowing how many cheques you have issued on a per month basis. You can also check your last 10 transactions you have made by using Rapid Response or you can check your transaction records on pc.easynet.

If you are not registered for these services, call Member Response on 13 63 73

10. If I do not use all my limited free transactions, can I keep them and use them the following month?
Transaction fees will be charged on a monthly basis and will be debited to the account transacted upon. You cannot carry unused limited free transactions over to the following month.

11. If I close my PC membership in the middle of the month will I still incur transaction fees?
You will be charged for any transactions you have made in excess of the limited number free transactions for the month in which you close your PC membership. Fees payable will be debited from your account on the last business day of the month.

12. Will all the transactions I make in a single month be included in that month's fee allocation?
Not necessarily. A transaction will only be included in that month's fee allocation when it reaches your account. If the transaction occurs on a weekend or public holiday, processing could be delayed. Some merchants may also take several days to process a transaction. So if you make a transaction near the end of a month, it may appear on your account in the following month and will then be part of that month's fee allocation.
